I notice that UAL and US have basically abandoned the orange tags...you have to beg them to put them on...I guess they a not pretending anymore.
I have noticed the opposite in YVR, and have not had many bad experiences in YYZ either, especially compared to YYC. Every flight from YYC-YVR I watch every priority bag leave the belly before the first passenger even gets off and it is always circling the belt waiting for me when I get to baggage claim. In YYC it’s like they take the priority bags off the plane and leave them sitting there while every other bag, including oversized/fragile is unloaded and placed out for pickup.
As for removing the priority tags, since it is a Star Alliance system wide program I doubt AC will, and since it works at most airports I fly into most, especially YVR, FRA, NRT, MUC, OSL I would like to see them remain. I am fully capable of waiting the extra half hour for my bags in YYC when I am just going to drive home after. However I would like to see AC improve YYC luggage handling.
