RTW ticket expiry

I purchased a RTW from UA back in 02. I had to cancel the whole itinerary prior to travel. I was told at the time that I could either refund the whole tix with 25% penalty or apply the value of the tix for future travel provided that the new itinerary remained a RTW and its value was equal to or higher than the ticketed itinerary. Can anyone confirm this? I seem to be getting nowhere with this with UA reservation since the reservation had long since been purched from the system. As suggested, I went to a ticket counter at the airport, after explaining to them the situation they told me that I could apply the value of the tix for future RTW travel. But until I actually ticket a new reservation, that's no way for me to find out if my old tix still holds value. Anyone came across the situation before?
