Any suggestions of a close hotel that one could stay in... I can't imagine staying at the airport all night.

I'm not a world traveller & the thoughet of staying in New York City is a little scary.
If you're arriving at JFK at 10:30pm, you probably won't want to drag into New York City for a few hours, only to have to leave the Hotel before 5am the next morning.

I'd recommend hotwire.com (or similar) and look for a Hotel in your price range close to JFK with a free airport shuttle. Alternatively try orbitz.com / expedia.com / hotels.com / aa.com etc etc - they tend to be a little more expensive but you know what you're getting before you commit to spending the money.
