I have no idea if this makes sense, but the thought occurred to me that maybe UA would prefer to give you MP miles in place of you beginning to build a significant balance with AA. Even though United doesn't get the revenue for the leg it could be considered an investment in retaining a customer.

Ok, so it is kind of a weak argument, but who knows? Sometimes the made up answer is more interesting than the actual one.
