5 Ways to Improve AA and AAdvantage...

First off, let me say that I think that AA and AAdvantage are amongst the best airline/FF combo in North America. The inflight crews and the ground staff are amongst the best in the industry and have gone above and beyond for me on several occasions. Still there are things I would like to see change with the FF program and the airline.

I'll start with the airline...
1) The 757 and 767-300 (I can't speak to the -200) Y-Cabins need some serious help (it's not called the Slaveship for nothing). The overhead bins are old and small. The chairs are frequently broken, getting a working powerport seems to be the luck of the draw, and the cabins are beyond ragged. AA announced they were going to install completely new cabins on the 757's last year, beginning this year, but we have yet to see or hear anything about the retrofits.

The TATL 767 Y Cabin is completely uncompetitive as every other US carrier that is flying 767-300's across the Atlantic has managed to install PTV's in coach years ago. Beyond that, the bins are completely inadequate for the carry-ons that people bring on board these days. The interiors of the planes are also dirty, dank, cramped and representative of an airline that hasn't invested in its planes in about two decades. Please AA, for the love of god, improve the Y 767 interiors so they are at least semi-comparable to the 777's.

2) Still on the international service, I was happy when I saw that AA was finally going to start offering snacks on long haul flights because the meals rarely fill me up and the pizza on the return is usually absolutely disgusting. I was less happy when I saw that AA was going to charge for them. I'm already paying something between 1000-2000rt for most of my TATL trips and I would have thought that AA could spring for a snack or two between the meals.

This gets to my whole problem with the BOB snack problems. I understand that there are many people on the flights who buy the cheapest tickets possible and they wouldn't give a care whether or not AA offers free booze or food. But that's not fair to us who fly on more expensive fares and fly frequently.

I think AA could rectify this situation by offering free food and chits for people flying on more expensive fares (Southwest does this with their BusinessSelect fares) and for people who fly frequently. Whenever people print their boarding passes from home or at the kiosks or get their boarding passes from the counter, just add another card with the food and drink chits on it.

3) The MD-80's Y Cabins (most specially the restrooms) could also use an upgrade and a good cleaning. Though, considering their age I generally find the MD-80's to be in good shape.

4) Clean and maintain AmericanEagle planes to the same standards that American's mainline service is held to. I have been on too many Eagle jets that are just falling apart.

5) AA makes you copay to upgrade every international fare (and Hawii) that isn't a full Y fare. Again, I take issue with every non-Y, B coach fare being treated as a Q/O fare in terms of upgrades. L, M, H, K, W, fares all provide for a lot of the flexibility of the Y fares (no change fees etc) without the massive upfront costs. They are also significantly more expensive than the Q/O fares that qualify as the "Most Discounted Economy Fare." I understand why the copay's exist. They help American recoup some of the revenue it would use on those super cheap flights being upgraded but that's not the issue since most of us aren't buying those super cheap tickets anyways.

It would be really nice if American would offer a third category for economy fares a "Discount Economy Fare" that would slot between "Most Discount" and the "Full Fare." I would be fine with being charged the same number of miles, it's just having to pay the same copay as someone who paid a third of what I did for my ticket irritates me.

This is my wish "to do" list to improve AA and AAdvantage (besides adding back some AUS nonstops which won't happen with oil at $110). What do you all think AA could do to improve the Airline and AAdvantage?
