I was just checking fares... since SIN fares run about 5XX from the west coast, and about 6XX from Chicago eastward, that I would be better off going to Sydney by way of Singapore for the extra miles AND for the lower cost, even though it would mean sitting in coach in SQ from SIN to SYD.

SIN to SYD is about SGD 800 or so, just slightly over USD 400. And you get mileage accrual.

A quick check of ORD-SYD fares via LAX/SFO yields USD 1400+ often.
