You're not exactly flying around the world (like me), so your strategy may be better with points rather than miles (I currently have 12k EQM on the year but 28 EQP). If the price difference is not much, go for the H ticket or better to get 2 EQP per segment (8 EQP per round-trip with connection -- even if you have to pay the extra $20-40 out of pocket once in a while to do it).
"Fortunately" for me, I don't have to up-fare because much of my travel is last minute leaving me only H & Y to choose from. I end up with more than enough EQP so that when I am able to plan ahead I can take an S or an I fare and not sweat my status.
I agree. this works for me as well. You could definitely make platinum with EQPs if you get a few 8 EQP trips.
