Unless they have changed the protocol, the pilot cannot have the gun outside of it's locked case except when in the cockpit. That includes inside the airport or in other areas of the plane.

While I think the FFDO program is a bad idea for any number of reasons, I don't believe that it is unreasonable to suggest that having the firearm loaded in the cockpit is a bad idea.

In the cockpit, the entire purpose of the FFDO program is to defend the flight deck. It would seem reasonable, then, that when in mission status that the firearm be loaded while the FFDO is on the flight deck.
