A few points...
First off, I disagree that they should be carrying rounds in the chamber. It takes a mere second to pull the slide to the rear and release it. A pilot locked on the flight deck will have time to pull the weapon and charge it. If this is the SOP, then there will be no 'the gun just went off on its own argument'. BTW, anyone who has worked around weapons knows what a ridiculous statement that is---guns don't just 'go off'. They go off because people pull the trigger or in extremely rare instances, they are dropped (even in that case, the weapon would probably be in poor repair anyway). I think that the benefits of not carrying a chambered round outweigh the arguments for having one chambered.
Secondly, this FFDO doesn't just need to lose his/her FFDO status, they need to lose their pilots license as well. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but discharging a weapon on a plane indicates carelessness and recklessness, two attributes that do not coincide with piloting aircraft. Bye bye, license. Of course, they do deserve a fair investigation first.
