I can go to a pub in England and pay £2 for a beer (£3 in a *wood property) and still feel I got a good deal relative to the dollar. Those places that charge outrageous prices for drinks appeal to a different clientele - those that are frivolous with their money and don't mind a 1000% markup on a drink, perhaps.
Ten or even twenty Euro for a drink in San Marcs and in particular in San Marc's quare is normal. And this has nothing to do with being frivolous with my money (side remark: Nobody from the US cared about the prices in Europe as long as the Dollar was at 1.20 or even 1.30 Euro for the Dollar). And I am surprised that you are surprised. The US is the prime location where you pay extra for drinks in great locations.
It is indeed the location that makes Venice expensive. You do not pay for the drink, you pay for the chair, the view and primiarily the location. Do you have any idea what are the costs of keeping Venice alive? A medival town built on (now) rotten trees? Do you have ever thought about that every little bottle for a small restaurant in St. Marcs has to be be brought in by boat? And the empty bottle has to be carried away again by boat? This is not (sorry for any not intended insult) Disneyland with perfect underground system, this is a living organizm that literally eats money.
As soon as you are getting over Rialto its getting cheaper as certain areas can be approached by car again, but not in St. Marcs.
