I remember that too - exactly 20 years ago I flew LAX-NRT on NW flight #1. Most of the pax around me in Y were well-built, 20s-30s short-cut hair guys.
And IIRC the flight was continuing to Okinawa, so I asked to a person sitting next to me, if they were military personnel, and yes they were Marines.
