For the OP: I don't anyone going to the JAX area avoiding it simply because of the things you mentioned.
I am also confused. If they are getting rid of the terminal in 2009, why recommend avoiding JAX for 22 months?
I haven't been there since leaving my ship and the Navy in Mayport, but if I have a need to be in the area, it seems a bit far to drive from Daytona.
Based purely on gossip provided by the Miller brew pub (I remain at a loss re: the use of this brand with this term) bartender, the new terminal is scheduled to come on line at the end of 2009, or roughly 20-22 months from now.
If you are flying to Florida destinations other than Jacksonville or the immediate area, or if you strongly object to unduly low ceilings, long, encumbered walks or "brew pubs" operated by the purveyor of Miller Lite, you may want to use another airport.
Additional facts -- AA operates only two gates, and they seem to be the farthest from security based. The waiting area is windowless and compares unfavorably to the Rector Street DMV office.
