I ee several threads on this with various answers, but specifically for a place that is totally non-touristy and basic, real, and "local," does anyone have any suggestions for place(s) to check out? Thanks!
totally non-toursity means the local economy and standards are Thai, along with no English being spoken. Virtually the entire Kingdom outside a handful of areas in BKK and resort beaches/islands, is just that. Those are places I feel most comfortable, so I can relate to your desires.

However, if you'd like a local taste, some dirt roads, wandering water buffalo, little commercialization, yet within striking distance of 'civilization,' one area that camne to mind is Rayong, about an hour, give or take, south of Pattaya. The Rayong resort is on the water, quite Thai in sensibilities, and very remote from town. It's a great place to relax. You can see Koh Samet from the resort, and easily hop over there for an afternoon.

Good luck in your travels.
