I've done this numerous times and never paid a booking fee. With the first option, just make sure you know AA's rules and ensure that your booking abides by them (e.g. don't take the last connecting flight of the day).
You got lucky. As a PLT, I created and placed on hold a complex res and called to have it ticketed because I was applying a voucher. (Yes not QUITE the same - but basically - doing something that the web can NOT do) and up through supervisors insisted in the booking fee. Thank GOD (Arpey?) for EXP fee waivers! (Basically I called the original voucher offer FRAUD - it is NOT worth what they say it is because it can NOT be redeemed without additional cost - but that's a gut reaction - NOT a legal analysis!) Anyway, I've been told it's the act of ticketing that requires the fee - NOT the act of reservation. I suspect - although never tried - that you could have an agent create and place on hold a res - ticket online and NOT pay the fee.
