Film being X-rayed

I will be flying on Tuesday and I am thinking about bringing a film camera (retro, I know). The film will already be loaded into the camera. It is a 24 shot black and white (very retro) film for a 35mm lens. I have heard that X-raying film would damage it, I don't want that to happen. Reading the TSA website it states that film should be fine for up to 5X's going through X-ray. Is that true? I want to make sure not to damage my film. Is there a way to ask the TSA not to X-ray my bag? Possibly a hand search. Although they couldn't see my film without exposing it. I'm developing the film and making prints myself (insanely retro) so having it developed would not be possible. Any suggestions to make sure my film is not damaged?
