It's not. Because domestic and international pax all use the same terminal and facilities a method has to be used to ensure that a domestic pax boarding is the same person who checked in and not, for example, a transit pax who is not entitled to enter the UK.
As to being treated like a criminal I really have no idea what the OP is wittering on about and the UK is not part of the Schengen area either. But whoever let facts get in the way of a provocative and ill-informed thread title...
