Most mature companies in UK have work/life balance more or less enshrined in their culture these days. In exchange for generous(ish) holidays and the right to get home at a resonable hour every night you are expected to work hard and efficiently during your daily contract hours. If my team are working repeatedly at 7.30 in the evening I'm assuming there must be time management, prioritization or resourcing issues at play. By the same token, working extra hours won't really get you brownie points when it comes to promotion etc
Regarding evenings and weekends, it is quite common to "talk shop" at evening social events and it is often a good time to talk about work issues informally and candidly. Weekends are a big no no, however.
