i love the transparency.. i was able to see on a recent UA flight that my companion, who was standing by for an upgrade on my account, was four spots ahead of me on the list. i'm premier exec on UA, he was chairmans on US. (there, i just made this post relevant to the US board! :-) )
CO is getting ready to roll out sometihng similar. They went a different route by making the info available on PDAs first (right now its still in beta). All of the intrepid FTers are helping them work out the bugs so that the back end of the system will be running flawlessly when they start putting it on the gate displays.

While on my way to EWR, I can check out the seat map, standby list, and upgrade list for an earlier flight as well as where its coming from vs the status of my booked flight, so I can make an intelligent decision right when I get to the airport.

By all appearances, US hasn't even begun to think about that kind of technology. Even if they started tomorrow it would be years.
