What Happened to [true] Super-Cover Car Rental Insurance
So, I get in touch with my usual travel planner at a major international travel company to set up a couple of car rentals for myself and family members who will be traveling to and around SA in the coming weeks and months. Almost reflexively, I go through the back and forth of emails with rates, etc.
Then, at the bottom of one of the travel planner's emails, she casually mentions that the excess for super-cover on auto insurance is now in the range of R5,000.00 to R6,000.00. What?!?
A couple of emails later, my travel planner notes that most companies have added or raised the super-cover "lately" and that finding "true" super-cover (e.g. walk away from damage or loss but for an admin fee of R500 to R1,000) is no longer available from the "major" car rental companies.
I always pitched super-cover to friends and family (particularly Americans) coming to SA - they're in a foreign country with opposite side driving, petty car break ins are possible, don't want your vacation slowed/bothered/etc. so pay for the extra insurance and your generally set.
Has my travel planner lost her mind? Am I missing something? Anyone know of major companies that still have "true" super-cover?
Thanks!
