I'm not saying Ziphone is bad (actually I used Ziphone to unlock and jailbreak my iPhone and it is a great software), but when one unlocks using Ziphone, (s)he must know the risk.
But you can downgrade 1.1.4 to a version that does match the firmware.

So unless the iPhone is completely beyond repair, there shouldn't be any reason to not downgrade before shipping it back.

Plus, if it really is beyond repair, chances are that Apple won't bother trying to put the pieces together and read the firmware/bootloader.
