I looked at my plane on the way to the gate at Dulles this morning and noticed that the US flag was painted on backwards (blue field to the right). When I mentioned it to the flight attendants, they said there was a reason for doing it that way but they didn't know what it was.

Does anyone know the reason the flags are painted backwards? It's not like an ambulance where you're looking in a rearview mirror or anything.
