There are vessels (not sure whether they are classed as ferries, "fast ferries", catamarans, flying dolphins or whatever) that go a lot faster than this. Last year, my parents went all the way from Piraeus to Ikaria (next to the Turkish coast) in well under 5 hours!

That fare isn't very cheap but it can almost be a bargain if you consider that you avoid having to be pushed, shoved and run the (relatively low, but still very real) risk of multi-hour delays that you do when taking sea transport in high season. "Really cheap" is in the eye of the beholder; there are no Greek LCCs, and that's not necessarily a bad thing (ask any resident of those islands if they want to trade 6 months of low fares for 6 months of no service!).
