I like the emex rows on airlines for that exact reason - it's a nice way of breaking the nice and chatting with the crew. Always a noice thing to do especially if you're going to spend the next 13 hrs or so with them.
However I do know that's not everyone's cup of tea.
I rarely get row 16, and usually miss out on the popular routes. Can't preselect them due to my plebian status and they'd all be taken up by the time I check in.
