Got a letter about buying/flying my status back

Last year was a tough year for my business, and after a February trip to Asia I didn't fly again. After my downgrade from 2P to a GM, I was depressed. Until today.

That's when the following letter came:

Dear Mr. Krustov,

Whether you fly United for work or pleasure, your travel needs can be as changeable as the weather. One season you're traveling all of the time, and the next you may be in a holding pattern. We want you to know that whatever your needs, you are our top priority. And to ensure you enjoy the services that best meet your travel plan, we're replacing your expired elite card with a new Mileage Plus card.

Exciting enhancements make the 2008 Mileage Plus program better than ever.

You'll find additional ways to earn and use miles, as well as privileges designed to make you feel relaxed, rewarded and recognized. The enhanced program also offers a variety of ways for you to regain your elite status.

Want to return to elite status TODAY?
Enjoy all the benefits of a Premier Associate membership for 90 days for a low one-time payment of USD$400. As a Premier Associate member, you can upgrade to an even higher level -- potentially in only one trip.

Here's how it works:
Enjoy Premier status when you purchase and fly at least 7,500 base flight miles or at least 10 base flight segments on United, United Express and Ted within 90 days.

Enjoy Premier Executive status when you purchase and fly at least 15,000 base flight miles or at least 18 base flight segments on United, United Express and Ted within 90 days.

Once you earn Premier or Premier Executive status, your membership will be valid until February 28, 2009.

If you do not upgrade to a higher status level within 90 days of registration, your Premier Associate membership will simply expire. You'll continue to enjoy the benefits of a Mileage Plus membership -- including the opportunity to earns miles with more than 100 Mileage Plus partners and redeem them for worldwide award travel.

At first I was a little bummed, and I felt they were rubbing it in with that barb about replacing my card with a GM card! But as I read further I realized this is very exciting to me, especially since I've got another Asia trip coming up in May. If I route it correctly, I'll not only get Premier back, but PremEx on top of that.

Has anyone done this sort of thing before? If I do this and get PremEx status, do I only have to get another 50k to get to 1K or does 1K still depend on my actual BIS for this year (I'm guessing the latter).

Seems like a sweet deal. Did anyone else get this?
