Mandala Air in Indonesia finally banned smoking last year I think. I flew SUB-BTH shortly after the ban took effect and many of the passengers were smoking in and around the rear lav. FA's told them not to but were ignored and after a while it appeared that the FA's had pretty much written it off as useless and unwinnable battle to try to get everyone to quit smoking. I am quite certain the smoke detector in the lav was either non functional or silent and ignored. I 'think' all the Indonesian Airlines have now officially banned smoking but some only very recently.
