I second this point. I've had excellent luck getting 'upgraded' seating assignments at online check-in time. So, if you're teetering on the edge of booking a flight, go for it...and then make sure to check in online early in the 24-hour preflight check-in window. At that time, a lot of 'premium' seats (like exit rows and adjacent seats in the front few rows with expanded leg room) tend to become available. Not a guarantee, and not as good as seeing choices ahead of time...but a decent strategy.
