Convair 990 was the next best thing to the Fast Plane, from an era when 20% extra fuel burn to get 5% extra speed was considered worth it, a favourite plane of Swissair when a roast was still carved by the seat in first class (pork even, and no vegetarian option). The sheer un-PC un-green decadance of the 1950's quest for speed and luxury still appeals to me.
