Hmm, this may be new. In any case the upgrades are restricted to high cost coach fares- Y, B & H. Moreover with BA, its Y to Y+ OR Y+ to J. More here:
4 For American Airlines, only fare classes Y, B and H are eligible for Economy to Business Class Upgrade Awards.
5 For British Airways, Upgrade Award is applicable for One Class Upgrade only. Fare classes Y, B and H are eligible for Economy to Premium Economy Class Upgrade Awards. Only fare classes W, T and E are eligible for Premium Economy to Business Class Upgrade Awards. Upgrade Award is not applicable for Economy to Business Class upgrade....
