An unknown part here for me is the "free" stay part as I've not gambled enough to get a comp'ed stay offer at PH but I have had several casino rate stays.

In any case, I'd recommend you always call ahead and have them add your Starwood # to your reservation (or do so at check-in)! Calling ahead might be better as, when I have done so, I have always already been "upgraded" by the time I check-in; the one time I added my # at check-in it took quite a bit longer to be re-assigned an upgraded room.

Although not "guaranteed", from my experiences here as a Starwood Gold member, I have always been upgraded to a resort view room (usually with a fantastic view of the Bellagio) when paying a casino rate (as low as $49 a weekday night). As a Gold you will, most likely, never get a suite upgrade but IMO the resort view rooms are quite nice. Also, if you add your Starwood number to your reservation, be sure to charge something to your room (i.e. a buffet, etc) and you should get Starwood points and stay credit even on a casino rate; at least I always have.
