Not enough details to make recommendations. Flying to BKK from where? (Int'l? Dom?) Airlines? Checked bags? Single ticket? Baggage interlining?
My best guess is that you have checked bags, that you are flying into BKK from outside Thailand, that you cannot check them through to your final destination and that you are on two tickets? You'll have to clear Immigration, retrieve bags, clear Customs. Figure that gets you to 02:00, NW probably opens for check-in at 04:00.
