although i mainly fly continental, i used to compare prices and flight schedules with delta. i do think that delta has drastically cut back on NYC-south florida flights. yes, there might be some LGA-FLL flights. but, there used to be more. and, there used to be (more) JFK-south florida flights. there has definitely been a cut back.
The OP mentioned it being a hassle to fly through ATL to get to FLL from NYC. With 4 daily LGA-FLL nonstops to choose from, I'm not sure where the hassle is, even if the number of flights between NYC and South Florida may have been greater in the past.
