Okay - how about if wife purchases (option online) enough points so that her own card holds enough for both herself and Mom? From what you're saying, she *should* be able to do both at ORD check-in, am I understanding that correctly?
That is correct, If there is space available the rules definitely allow upgrading the member and any travel companion from just the members points.
