If the upgrade can be arranged at check-in, and he is present, he should be able to sponsor the upgrade, if it happens at the gate, and he is not traveling with them, then he will not, as he needs to physically sign for the use of the points.. They definitely will not allow splitting the cost of an upgrade across multiple accounts.
