In the US, there is no tradition or requirement for lawyers to wear the robe and wig as there is in other countries that are former British colonies. Judges often wear a black robe, though some prefer formal or conservative business wear.
The one exception is the Solicitor General - when the Solicitor General (or an assistant) argues a case before the Supreme Court of the United States, he or she wears morning dress, with striped trousers, grey ascot, waistcoat, and a cutaway morning coat.
