Same here. I learned this after renting a car a DFW, and getting to my hotel 30 minutes later to find I didn't have my card. An immediate call to card services determined that over $2000 had been charged in the previous 20 minutes. They took care of it of course. I never do the "leave your card at the bar/restaurant to keep your tab open" never. I'll pay cash or per round. Whenever I pull the card out to pay for something, the wallet stays in the left hand until the card has been returned to it's slot. It's automatic. I don't even think about it.
