Until *A carriers implement Alliance upgrades, it is essentially worthless. I usually *avoid* flights on other *A carriers since the only perk is lounge access and status miles. I don't even get my 1K bonus.

Just my $0.02, but unless you are really looking to experience the Singapore service, I would be pragmatic and simply take an international first award on United. You could fly JFK-NRT-HKG and get a first suite the whole way. Even a standard award will be cheaper than your Singapore Airlines award.
