I was thinking about booking an award ticket with Singapore airlines to Hong Kong, but they only serve this from SFO. Therefore, I was told that the domestic leg from NYC to SFO must be in United economy.

Does this mean that it will be booked in economy, and upgraded if possible at departure? Or not upgradeable at all?
