I find staying in the 1st district within walking distance of everything to be the best. We've stayed with our friends before in the 18th but always want to do everything in the first.
My knowledge about VIE is rather limited, as I've only been there once and that was 7 years ago! I was referring to prices in KRK, where the difference between heart-of-the-city and suburb-near-the-centre can literally be €100 a night for comparable 4* accom.
