Let me know if anybody here has any earlier experience carrying such an item as checked baggage.
2.5 years ago I had my SO carry a 20-inch CRT television transcon (with a connection) as checked baggage in a cardboard box with minimal styrofoam packing.* The size of the box was exactly the maximum allowed by the airline, and the weight was just under the allowed 50 pounds.

The airline (UA) made her sign a waiver saying they weren't liable for damages, and marked it fragile. The TV made it just fine, in spite of tumbling end-over-end as it came onto the baggage carousel.

TSA opened the box, put their little "we looked here" card in the box, and re-taped it with their own tape. I can't imagine why they bothered to do that other than to answer the obvious silly question, "did someone actually check a TV?"

I suspect my TV was a good bit more fragile than an LCD, especially with the LCD in it's original box and packing material. All I'd suggest is putting a good amount of padding inside the suitcase around the box (foam, popcorn, clothes, whatever) so it's not bouncing around in there.

*Why we did this: It would have cost more than the value of the CRT to ship it via USPS/UPS, so it was cost effective to give me the CRT only if the transport was free. If it didn't go to me, it was going to be recycled/donated, so there was no real loss if it broke.
