Sounds like an abberation because a note in the PNR advising check-in staff of the change would have likely fixed it. This is an extremely common occurance - probably happens multiple times a day at LON and SIN - though there may always be an exception to the rule. In my view the OP wasted his time fixing something that didn't need to be fixed in the first place. But since it worked out - all the better.

Imagine going on your honeymoon and being denied check-in because your ticket is in your (new) married name and your pasport in your maiden name.
