I used to fly United a lot, and I've never been a great flyer when it comes to turbulence. Channel 9 was great, tuned into the cockpit, whenever it would get real bumpy, I'd switch to channel 9. As long as no one was panicking on the flight deck (and of course, they never were) I'd feel better immediately.

I'm sure there must be "why doesn't AA have channel 9" threads somewhere...
