Your *A program is US, the OP is using miles from UA. That's why you had no problem.

UA is notorious for blocking availability on partner flights which *A airlines make available via Star Alliance's Starnet. Search the UA forum for "Starnet" and read many a tail of woe.

US does not filter Starnet, at least not nearly as much as UA does.
