Oh they don't always know when you left the US.

I have left on a USG government passport not linked to a tourist one (the numbers are not linked, unless that changed in the last couple of months). I have left by road to another country then flown back, and I left on various military aircraft without needing a passport period, even entering and exiting on commercial aircraft with just orders. And I have entered Europe on a Euro passport, thus not having my US one tagged. In these situations USCBP could not see all of my travels.

They have no way of seeing all that information, unless you are just a ma and pa Kettle type traveling on a single blue tourist passport, scanned each time you leave.
