So why do they call it "standby" if it's confirmed?

Apparently the rules allow changing connecting airports. I'm sure my friend has the cheapest non-refundable fare, so it's not Y, B, or H.

So would my status make it any easier for me to change, or is the ability to change based more on flight availability?
