My new regime:

Try to go to Newark - the AirTrain is really, really a good solution (not as good during the morning rush)...

If you have to go to JFK, take a car service. It's between $35-$45 (+tolls/tip). Not worth the hassle waiting for cabs, etc. And, if required, you can usually also get one at the last minute when you arrive at JFK and the cab line is an hour long...

I usually use Tel-Aviv: 212-777-7777 - I find them to be quite reliable and friendly.

The A train, imho, is about the dumbest airport-transit thing I've ever experienced. I'll never do that again.
