Seriously, the hand-blender idea is excellent. Here's a nice Braun model, similar to the one I own. (I picked up it for ~$20 at Costco.) Highly recommended not only for its power and über-durability -- it does a fine job of ice as well as stringy fruit (such as papaya, pineapple, mango, etc.) -- but also because the immersion end comes off for easy cleaning under small hotel sink faucets.

I've had my Braun for coming up on 4 years and it's still running like a champeen mini-Osterizer. ^
