I’m a newbie, residing about 10km west of PER. My SO and I have done three RoW trips – one was a OWE, one a GE (so we could fly LAX-NAN-SYD on FJ), one was a ‘The World Journey’ trip – where we worked in JFK-PPT-SYD on TN.
We’ll soon be empty nesters, and are planning a long leisurely RoW trip to celebrate. I had been identifying and considering the various options, when came across the FlyerTalk forum – and there I was thinking I was the only one who investigated getting the maximum benefit out of RoW tickets!
I was especially interested in the idea of starting a trip from outside my home continent, but including it in my itinerary and thus breaking the trip into stages. The fact that fares can be significantly cheaper elsewhere is also of interest (and MRU is not too far from PER

)
So, I’ve already got benefit from the forum already and think I should contribute in return.
I don’t know if people have delved into these topics before – if they’ve been done to death already then my apologies, but I couldn’t find anything in the OW archive. The source of my queries is the technical rule sheet on oneworld.com (

Intercontinental Departures and Arrivals (Rule 4e)
Continent Asia – the wording is “Two permitted in Asia when one is a transfer without stopover or on direct single plane service between the Southwest Pacific and Europe”
Q1. Does this mean two are permitted when one is between SWP and Europe – whether a transfer or on a direct single plane service (i.e. between SWP and Europe
only)
Or does it mean two are permitted when one is either a transfer between two other continents (e.g. SWP and Nth America, SWP and Africa), or it is a direct single plane service SWP-Europe
If it is the latter, then that opens up more possibilities.
Continent North America – the wording is “Two permitted in North America. when one is a transfer without stopover.”
Unlike the rule for Asia, this rule does not mention direct single plane services between two other continents. I’ve only identified one such service – JL’s NRT-SAO flight which is via JFK. I suspect the rule pre-dates JL joining one world.
Q2. So, does anyone know:
- if flying NRT-SAO (without stopover in JFK) is allowed
- if so, does it count as an Arrival and Departure to/from North Americao if it doesn’t then can the flight be taken without even including North America in the RoW itinerary
o if it doesn’t then would you still have your two allowed North American arrival and departures available (one a stopover, the other a transfer)
