I will suggest LH via MUC. I don't think they will like the "slopey" LH C seat, but am sure that the LH F seat is pretty good. I am not sure that they will go for connecting in Germany (or any country other than the UK), though. Although, personally, I would trust LH to transfer the baggage at connection more than BA... Apparently they have already considered connecting elsewhere in the US (i.e. EWR) and aren't very keen on it.
I think that Heathrow is ok because they are familiar with it (MIL is a UK citizen and very frequent traveller, and her Mum has flown in and out of Heathrow quite a few times). Whereas I doubt that either of them have ever been to Germany.
I will try to ensure that they book everything on one itinerary (so that they are protected if one flight gets delayed), so am pretty sure that they will end up on BA. Hopefully their baggage will arrive in Barcelona with them
