It's common for AA to give miles when an aircraft returns to an airport. I wasn't on your flight, but I was on AA86, DFW-ORD (777) on 02/23 and after takeoff, a cargo hold door apparently came unlocked and we returned to DFW after making lots of left-hand turns for about 30 minutes. I got a 3000 mile bonus for the incident.
