Service is mostly even. JL is consistently good, while CX will occasionally wow you and other times, it's just OK (but still way above any US based carrier).
Just wanted to chime in to say that JL's business class has improved vastly over the last 4 years or so. It's like a whole different experience. The Shell Flat Seat is a huge leap over the last generation seat, and the food service has been greatly expanded. After the first meal, there is now a dine-whenever-you-want menu with something like 13 options including two full meals and various snacks.

And JL's FAs are amazingly consistent. I've seen others on Flyertalk say that they have never been disappointed with JL service, while CX FAs will sometimes let them down.

Gotta agree, though, that the CX lounges in HKG can't be beat. I just experienced their F lounge in HKG today for the first time... WOW!!

And JL's IFE is quite poor (but has recently been vastly improved on the 777-300s, though these won't fly to the US until August). Seems to be a Japanese thing. I understand that NH's IFE is equally terrible.
